By building a production system model that allowed the company to turn out quality paint jobs for a fraction of the cost of dealerships, Maaco gave birth to a franchise model that now includes close to 500 facilities painting over 600,000 vehicles a year. The auto collision repair market is 10 times bigger than the $1 billion production auto painting market Maaco has historically dominated, and there is much more competition. One of Maaco’s major goals is changing the misconception that it mostly paints and does body work on older cars. Advertising now stresses collision and spot repair capabilities for newer cars, as well. Currently, Maaco is working to certify all of its franchise centers in collision and spot paint repairs to late-model vehicles. About 200 centers were certified as of June 2007, and Mr. Martino expects the project to be completed in early 2008. To date, Maaco has painted more than 16 million cars. About one-fourth of them are fleet vehicles.
