As of the beginning of 2008, Zumiez operated 285 stores and had a presence in 27 states. Zumiez stores are often found near and feed off of other specialty retail stores such as Abercrombie and Fitch, American Eagle, Hot Topic, etc. However, Zumiez markets itself towards individuals who do not like wearing what the usual crowd wears (Hollister, A.E., Abercrombie, etc.). Zumiez more closely resembles a skate-shop than a clothing store, which some[attribution needed] praise for returning skate-shops to malls. Zumiez competes fiercely with these stores over the business of mall-going teenagers.

Each store is approx. 2,700 sq. feet.[citation needed] The stores generally feature the sales floor, a couch with video games and television, changing rooms, and a 'skate shop.' Every summer Zumiez holds their annual "Couch Tour" in which a specific skateboarding team travels the country (mall to mall) and holds an outdoor "demo" where they show off their best skateboarding skills. Other key parts of the Couch Tour include live music provided by popular bands, product giveaways, and of course - a couch and TV set up with the Tony Hawk skateboarding video game. [edit] Urban Myths It is untrue that Zumiez stores will give a free skate deck to customers that bring in a picture of a Zumiez sticker on a police car. Zumiez happily gives customers free logo stickers as part of it marketing strategy, but does not condone placing stickers on anything other than the customer's personal property.
