Hamburg, Arkansas, (population 3,039) was established as a result of the November 1848 decision of the Arkansas General Assembly to create Ashley County and a county seat in the geographical center of the new county. The town was named after Hamburg, South Carolina, where many early residents originated. Businesses and churches developed on what are now Cherry and Adams streets, and the town was incorporated in 1854. Hamburg served as the center of government and a source of supplies and materials for the surrounding area.
