The Army & Air Force Exchange Service (more commonly know as "The Exchange" or "AAFES") is a branch of the US Department of Defense that provides merchandise and services to members of the armed forces at discounted prices. Exchanges typically resemble department stores, and sell a variety of goods including navy uniforms, health and beauty products, athletic gear, men's and women's clothes, beer and wine, liquor, and more. Many NEX locations also have service shops and stores, including barber shops, movie theaters, and car maintenance and repair.

In addition to bringing familiar goods to members of the Military, exchanges generate supplementary funds that support United States Army and Air Force Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) programs. Roughly 2/3 of The Army & Air Force Exchange Service's earnings are donated to MWR programs. The remaining Exchange revenue is used to construct new stores and renovate old facilities without expense to taxpayer dollars.
