Each of the playgrounds on this map has been especially well reviewed by either parents, kids, experts, or a combination of the three. Although the criteria for awarding a playground with "Best" status differed from site to site and article to article, playgrounds were typically judged on measures such as safety, amenities, location, and, of course, fun.

Included among the playgrounds are sites with truly exception play equipment, such as Powell Barnett Park in Seattle, which boasts a wading pool and a massive climbing structure, and sites with remarkable settings, such as The High Line in New York City, which is constructed on a defunct elevated train line. There are also playgrounds of immense size, such as Brighton, Michigan's Imagination Land at 10,000 square feet, and playgrounds that attempt to both entertain and educate their visitors, such as as Kellog Park Eco-Playground in New Orleans, which is made of moving solar-powered play equipment and teaches children about the importance of self-sustainability.
