Columbus Day celebrates the anniversary of Italian explorer Christopher Columbus's historic arrival in America, which occurred on October 12th of 1492. Although the event has been unofficially commemorated since its 300th anniversary in 1792, Columbus Day became a official federal holiday in 1937. Today, the holiday has been fixed to the second Monday in October, and observed by banks, the postal service, and the bond market, as well as most state and federal agencies, businesses, and school districts. Columbus day holds special significance for Italian-Americans, who observe it as a celebration of their heritage and culture.
