A botanical garden (also called a "botanic garden" or an "arboretum") is a designated, tended area containing a wide range of flowers and trees that have been labeled with their scientific botanical names. Botanical gardens may differ on the plants they display based on their region; for example, a botanical garden in Phoenix may display a specialist cacti collection, while a garden in Denver may display alpine plants. Greenhouses, which are essentially just indoor botanic gardens, may display any type of plant their choose (although they often grow tropical plants and exotic plants) due to the growing conditions created by artificial climate control. Most botanical gardens are open to the public, and may offer visitor services such as tours, educational sessions, and outdoor theater and art exhibitions.

Many of the botanical gardens on this map are owned and run by universities and/or scientific research organizations. The gardens are used as practical areas of study for associated research programs (e.g. botany programs, gardening and landscape programs, plant taxonomy). The programs maintain the existing collection of plants, a large part of which entails documenting new collections for the purpose of conservation, research, and public display.
