"Halal" is an Arabic word that essentially means "permissible," especially when used in the context of Islamic law ("Shariah"). The concept of halal most often pop ups in reference to food products. Just as orthodox Jews can only eat kosher foods, practicing muslims are supposed to follow relatively strict dietary restrictions laid out in the Koran.
