Japanese Gardens are carefully planned, traditional gardens landscaped in abstract and stylished ways. Originating in Japan, Japanese gardens were originally designed for Emperors and the noble class, who used them for recreational and artistic purposes, and Buddhist temples, where they were spiritual areas ideal for peaceful meditation. There are several Japanese garden styles, including rock gardens (karesansui); Zen gardens, made of white sand and designed for meditation; teahouse gardens (roji) for tradtional tea ceremonies; stroll gardens (kaiyū-shiki-teien), which visitors tour to see painstakingly composed landscapes; and courtyard gardens (tsubo-niwa).
