About Nude Beaches and Clothing Optional Beaches

A nude beach or a naturist beach is a beach where visitors typically wear no clothing. Some nude beaches are clothing optional (a.k.a. "free beach"), while others require full nudity. In the history of naturism, nude beaches have been one of the most common and popular places of practice. The modern origin of nude beach dates back to various sites on the French coastline in the 1950s, but humans have... Read More

...ostensibly bared it all on beaches since the beginning of time. It's generally a good time.

Nude beach proponents emphasize the distinction between nude beaches and topless beaches (a.k.a. "topfree beaches") where upper body clothing or swimwear is not required for women, but the genitals of both sexes must be covered. This map contains mostly nude and clothing-optional beaches, although it's possible a few topless beaches have slipped in.

Nude beaches have a long a stories history of tangling with local law enforcement. Since public nudity is banned in many parts of the world (including most cities and states in the US), nude beaches have been specifically targeted in police raids or legislation prohibiting sexually oriented businesses. Naturist groups (e.g. the Naturist Action Committee) have lobbied extensively against such discriminatory laws, maintaining that there's nothing inherently sexual about a nude beach. Moreover, clothes-free areas tend to be segregated or at least geographically isolated from non-nude areas, ensuring that nobody is offended. Where this is not the case, experienced nudies tend to have the good sense to maintain a comfortable distance from non-nudes. Nudists typically want to keep separate from non-nudists to avoid over-curious peepers and voyeurs.

There are several types of nude beaches:

Traditionally nude beaches: Most nude beaches have been in use for several decades, thus becoming known as places where nudity is customary, if not explicitly mandated. These are often beaches that aren't managed by any government authority, and instead have been adopted by local nude visitors. Nudity may not be official, but it's either not on the police's radar or it's tolerated.

Official nude beaches: Some nude beaches are officially designated as nude or clothing-optional by the local municipal government. Authorities will not interfere in naturist activities in these beaches, as they've been specifically instructed not to.

Private resorts and private property beaches: Some resorts and landowners choose to allow nudity on their grounds. These include nude resorts as well as unofficial non-nude ones that just have a freewheeling attitude towards clothing. Resorts and landowners are free to tolerate nudity on their property, but they tend to have a difficult time enforcing their rules on adjacent beaches. The Caribbean, Mexico, and Florida don't allow corporate ownership of beaches, meaning that all beaches must allow public access and be subject to local decency laws.

Beaches where nudity is illegal: The vast majority of beaches do not tolerate any sort of nudity. Naturists at these beaches may be subjected to requests to cover up, fines, citations, and even arrests.
