Pumpkin patches and pumpkin farms engage in the cultivation and retail of pumpkins, a gourd-like squash native to North America. Those familiar with the squash will recognize their bright orange exterior, thick, creased shell, and seed-filled inside.

Pumpkins hold a special place in Western (especially American) culture because of their significance to Halloween. A common Halloween tradition is to pick a perfect pumpkin (known as "pick your own") from a pumpkin patch or pumpkin farm, then carve that pumpkin into a Jack-o-lantern to be displayed to visitors on the night of October 31st.
