Raw food restaurants serve food that hasn't been cooked or processed, and is typically organic (i.e. naturally grown). Although anyone is free to eat at raw food restaurants, they're especially designed for those on a raw food cleanse or raw food diet (a lifestyle known as "raw foodism"). Pure Raw foodists stick to a diet of raw vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds (e.g. gaba rice), eggs, unprocessed and non-homogenized dairy products (e.g. raw milk, cheese, and yogurt), as well as safe-to-eat raw meats like sashimi and carpaccio. There are several purported benefits of the raw food diet; some proponents believe that cooked meats produce the same type of chemicals found in cigarette smoke and car exhaust, while others claim that cooking food destroys its nutrients and helpful digestive enzymes. Critics, however, point out the potential pitfalls of eating uncooked and unprocessed food, including the dangers of ingesting harmful bacteria and other agents of foodborne illness.
