A swimming hole is loosely defined as an area in a natural body of water (e.g. creek, stream, river, spring, etc.) that is deep enough and for someone to swim in. Swimming holes are typically understood to be located in small bodies of fresh water, precluding them from existing in oceans (although this is disputed - sand bars and barriers can form swimming hole-type environments).
Humans have visited swimming holes for hundreds of thousands of years. Due to their remoteness, nude bathing and naturism is often practiced at swimming holes. Please use caution before swimming nude at a swimming hole, as nudity may be prohibited by law. Even if you're swimming in clothes or a bathing suit, exercise caution in the presence of currents and the absence of lifeguards.
