Handel's Messiah is an oratorio composed in 1741 by legendary composer George Frideric Handel. Despite failing to win over most audiences at first, it has gained popularity over the years, and now is recognized as one of the premier choral works in Western music. Even those who don't know the name of the oratorio will likely recognize the catchy "Hallelujah" chorus in Part II.
There are hundreds Handel's Messiah performances every Christmas season. Although originally composed for modest vocal and orchestral forces, it is often adapted into an epic performance on a much larger scale. Some of the better known groups to perform the Messiah each Christmas are the New York Philharmonic and the National Symphony Orchestra.
