A "Turkey Trot" is a race that's held over or around Thanksgiving weekend. It's regarded as somewhat of a Thanksgiving tradition, and hundreds of Turkey Trots occur throughout the US each year. The unofficial purpose of Turkey Trots is for runners to burn off all the excess calories they've consumed or will consume at Thanksgiving Dinner. While it's highly unlikely a runner will actually accomplish this task given the gargantuan portions of high calorie foods such as mashed potato and gravy, it's still a nice and healthy sentiment. Many Turkey Trots are actually held for the purpose of raising money to buy Thanksgiving Dinners for low-income and homeless families.
Turkey Trots range in distance from one mile to full marathons, such as the Atlanta Marathon, which is held on Thanksgiving Day. A typical Turkey Trot distance is probably around 5K, but more grueling distances as well as fun runs for kids can also be found on our map.
This directory of Turkey Trots has been developed over the years so there may be duplicate or out of date information so please confirm the event before making plans or attending.
